Putting the Free in Freelancer

Last Wednesday was a slow day for me. Work was scarce and my productivity and creativity levels were down. I needed some fresh air. As freelancers, we are often so chained to our desks, constantly hitting that “Send/Receive” buttons hoping for a new project assignment, that we often forget to live. And not work, just LIVE. So what did I do?

Lost in the Belgian countryside…

I escaped. Yes, without warning anyone, without even planning it. I took the car and started driving, not knowing where I was going. The fun part was deciding at the last moment whether to turn left, right or to keep going. I ended up lost in the Flemish countryside, surrounded by villages I had never heard of before. And you know what? I loved it. I felt free although I’m usually a very organized person who doesn’t have a high tolerance for unexpected events.

Driving further, I started to think… Being a freelancer doesn’t mean working for free. It means choosing how you work, who you work with, when you work and where. You decide your work hours and if you want to take a break, so be it. It also means being responsible afterwards and catching up on the “lost” hours. Are they really lost, though? I don’t think so. When I came back home, I felt refreshed, had new ideas for my business, new potential clients to investigate and… this blog post idea.

So, what are you waiting for? Go out there, explore the world and do what YOU want to do!

I think that these ‘freedoms’ we allow ourselves as freelancers can improve our productivity, too. This makes business sense and is good for the soul 🙂

Great idea … I try to do that when I can. Not often but that probably means I appreciate it all the more when I can! And I definitely work better when I get back to the desk.
    Have a great Thursday!

It’s often better to go out and enjoy some fresh air than staying in front of the computer and getting frustrated.
Have a great Thursday too, Clair, and thanks for commenting!
